Salt Dough Recipes for Ornaments

Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • - 1-2 cups all-purpose flour
  • - ½ to 1 cup table salt
  • - ½ to ¾ cup warm water
  • - Optional: acrylic paints glitter, non-toxic acrylic varnish, mod podge, or polyurethane spray

Instructions

  • Cooking Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 225-250°F (107-121°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine 1-2 cups of all-purpose flour and ½ to 1 cup of table salt. Mix well.
  • Gradually add ½ to ¾ cup of warm water to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.
  • Transfer the mixture to a lightly floured surface or parchment paper and knead it for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes soft and pliable.
  • Roll the dough out to a thickness of ¼ inch using a rolling pin.
  • Use cookie cutters or sculpt the dough into your desired shapes and sizes.
  • Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake the ornaments in the preheated oven for 1.5 to 3 hours, flipping them halfway through the baking time. Baking time may vary based on the size and thickness of your shapes.
  • Once baked, allow the ornaments to cool completely before decorating.
  • For best results, remember that salt dough creations can be air-dried instead of baked, which can yield a smoother finish. If you choose this method, be sure to let the ornaments dry for 4-7 days and handle them with care to avoid breaking.
  • When decorating, consider using non-toxic paints and finishes for safety, especially if children are involved in the crafting project. Don't forget to seal your creations for long-lasting beauty and durability!
